Inflation

The gradual rise in prices that reduces what each dollar can buy over time.

Inflation is the general increase in prices across the economy, which means your money buys a little less each year. A dollar today typically stretches further than a dollar a decade from now.

It is why simply hoarding cash loses value over time, and why long-term savings usually need to be invested to at least keep pace with rising prices.
