Amortization

Paying off a loan through regular equal payments split between interest and principal.

Amortization is the schedule by which a loan like a mortgage or car loan is repaid in fixed installments. Early payments are mostly interest; later ones are mostly principal, even though the payment stays the same.

Understanding this is why extra payments early in a loan are so powerful: they attack the principal before years of interest can accrue on it.
